As many pool owners have learned, algae not only tarnishes the beauty of your pool but can also lead to costly repairs if left unchecked. Understanding the importance of algae prevention is crucial for pool maintenance.
How To Prevent Algae
Preventing algae is far more effective than dealing with an outbreak! It’s both more affordable and easier to stop algae from forming than to eliminate it once it’s in your pool. Regular preventive measures include:
- Apply an anti-algae product weekly. Before using any anti-algae treatment, make sure your water’s pH is balanced and your filter is functioning properly.
- When going into other people’s pools, lakes, or the ocean try to not share floaties, and make sure you thoroughly wash your bathing suits as mustard algae is easy to spread by simply using a pool floaty in the lake and than using in your pool, or not washing a bathing suit and swimming in a pool that has mustard algae.
- Cover Your Pool. A quality pool cover not only prevents algae from entering the water but also keeps leaves, insects, bacteria, and dirt from decomposing in the pool, which can provide nutrients for algae growth.
How To Treat Algae
With algae we always recommend following the Algae Destruction Method. (view here) When using this method for mustard algae throw all things into the pool including floaties and toys, vacuum.
If it is yellow algae (mustard algae) this can sometimes be impossible to get rid of unless you replace the liner. I would still recommend the Algae Destruction Method; you can also try using filter enhance to help remove small particle. Switching to AFMng may be beneficial as it has the ability to filter up to 1 micron. Lastly you can vacuum very slowly to waste to try to remove. The biggest problem with mustard algae is we get close to it with a vacuum, and it disappears in a cloud and than settles in the same area.
